All it took was one car accident to derail Charlie Davies’ World Cup chances.

The injuries from his October 2009 accident appeared irreparable — a broken and dislocated left elbow, broken right femur, tibia and fibula, broken nose, broken forehead, broken eye socket, ruptured bladder and bleeding on the brain.

Left off that injury report was his spirit. A furious rehabilitation period had Davies thinking that South Africa was in his plans.

But the AP reported no medical clearance by his French club Sochaux sealed the deal. And U.S. coach Bob Bradley agreed with the assessment.

“We feel it is in Charlie’s best interest to continue his rehabilitation and focus on getting fully prepared to resume his professional and international career,” Bradley told the AP.

Despite the disappointing decision, Davies’ optimism was in full swing on his Twitter page.
