Sex and the City 2 may have been made during the recession, but who wants to see Carrie Bradshaw in knockoffs? There’s been some griping about the rumored extravagance of the clothing budget for SATC2, reportedly worth $10 million, to which I say, whydoyouthinkwewatchtheshowanyway?
For her part, Sarah Jessica Parker says the $10 million price tag is just a myth. “There is no price tag on that wardrobe, it is all borrowed,” she says.
Borrowed or bought, who cares?! We ladies watch for the clothes, so the richer the better. When it comes to the Sex and the City movies, there’s no high-tech explosions, bazillion dollar sets or 3-D animation, but there is clothes. Lots and lots of beautiful, don’t-you-wish-you-could-wear-them-even-for-one-night clothes. While some details of their New York City lives have been scaled back to reflect the hard times of the past two years (Big and Carrie give up their amazing penthouse for more affordable digs), the all-expenses paid trip to Abu Dhabi is where the high, high-fashion really shines.
In the karaoke scene, which has been the subject of much of the big-budget rumors, Carrie’s outfit rings in at more than $50,000 (her Chanel dress and overskirt cost $47,190 alone). Samantha dons spiky, bejeweled shoulders by Blonds that cost $5,000. In a later scene, Miranda wears a 24-carat gold cuff worth a five-figure sum. As Women’s Wear Daily writes, “Costumer Patricia Field wasted no chance to beturban and bejewel the ladies to cartoonish extremes, which is by now par for the course.”
Does that bother you? Don’t see the movie. Meanwhile, I’ll be in the front row, dreaming of Dior.
