Satire, meet reality. Someone nefarious gained brief access to BP’s official U.S. Twitter account and used their posting power to reference a satirical BP feed. Confused? Let’s sort this one out.

BP maintains an official Twitter account, @BP_America. According to a report from Fox News, someone gained unauthorized access to the account this morning, posting a message referencing the company’s on-going “top kill” effort to stop the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico: “Terry is now in charge of operation Top Kill, work will recommence after we find a XXL wetsuit. #bpcares #oilspill.”

Though BP regained access and deleted the message, the brief takeover left followers wondering who Terry is. Terry is a fictional reoccuring character on a satirical BP Twitter feed, @BPGlobalPR (which is really, really awesome). And after his brief flirtation with legitimacy, someone’s taken it upon themselves to create Terry his own feed. Follow along at @BPTerry.
