The movie world descended upon London Wednesday night. No major shocks: Twilight stole the limelight. Harry Potter wasn’t neglected. World continues to spin on its axis.
The Twilight Saga: New Moon won best fantasy movie, Robert Pattinson was awarded best performance and Eclipse was named the summer’s most anticipated movie (we like to get ahead of ourselves in London). But talk about a tough room: there was some booing when it was announced that Pattinson wasn’t there in person due to filming commitments. And then one of the on-stage hosts called him a very rude word.
Other notable results: British franchise (albeit with American dollars) Harry Potter scooped best family film (Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince) as well as the special recognition award, where everyone on stage seemed to pay tribute to author JK Rowling.
And the night wrapped up with Tom Cruise winning the screen icon award. Gwyneth Paltrow presented him with the trophy: “For over two decades he has shown a bold eagerness to take risks, engaging and enthralling audiences,” she gushed. Cruise was similarly effusive, telling the British audience that, “This great city of London. This great country England. I’ve made several films here. I have been fortunate,” before concluding with, “If I have entertained you at all, I thank you. Thank you for allowing me to do so.”
