“Top Kill” Effort Unsuccessful, Says BP

After three days of observation, BP has concluded that its latest effort to stop the massive undersea oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico has failed, a company representative said Saturday.

BP Chief Operating Officer Doug Suttles said the company determined the “top kill” method, which involved pumping heavy drilling mud into the crippled well 5,000 feet underwater, had failed to stop the leakage. The oil company says it will now move on to “the next option” — reportedly, using robot submarines to cut away the damaged riser where the leak originated and cap the well below.
