New Yorkers walk fast. And most don’t own a car. So the sidewalks are where the morning commute takes place — and where meandering tourists can cause rather chaotic pedestrian traffic jams.
Well Improv Everywhere –- the New York flashmob group that organizes an annual “No Pants Subway Ride” — recently took to the streets with a can of spray paint and a couple of guys in orange vests. Their goal? To establish clear and distinct walking lanes for both New Yorker and tourists.
So they painted the sidewalks, then filmed this video –- and then left the white spray paint up for a couple days until the Department of Transportation finally removed it:

Even Mayor Bloomberg gave the group a good-hearted thumbs up, describing the innocent little prank as “cute.”
Then again, judging by the video, a couple New Yorkers thought it was way more than just cute. A couple passersby filmed here were quick to give passionate high-fives, thanking these pranksters for regulating the tourist hordes. I bet they’d love permanent lanes along all the city’s streets.
