Mass Gathering

Some 20,000 revelers gathered at the Stonehenge site in England to celebrate the summer solstice, the longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere.

An Eclectic Crowd

The celebration attracted everyone from Druid followers to sun-worshippers to the merely curious. It's long been theorized that the Stonehenge formation functioned as some sort of solar calendar.

Massive Statue

Observers contributed to a lively early morning atmosphere, flying kites and erecting this massive statue.

Clear Skies

Weather for the summer solstice was favorable, allowing the spectators to observe the sunrise. In past years, cloud or mist has obstructed the view.

Start of the Solstice

Many turn the Stonehenge trip into an annual pilgrimage, returning each year to watch the sun rise through the monument's mysterious, massive stones.

Ancient Stones

Researchers have dated the Stonehenge monument to as far back as 2500 B.C., although no one is quite sure how the ancient Bronze Age people were able to move and raise the massive stones used in the site's construction.
