It was the National Enquirer that broke the John Edwards lovechild scandal, and now the tabloid is targeting Al Gore, with salacious new allegations that the Associated Press has partially corroborated with official police reports. (Via AP)

The story dials all the way back to 2006, with a massage in a Portland hotel that resulted in a criminal complaint of “unwanted sexual contact” by the female masseuse.

After initially contacting the police in the autumn of 2006, the woman – not named by either the AP or the Enquirer – refused to be interviewed further about the incident later that winter, or proceed with the complaint. But in 2009, the case was reopened, the masseuse was interviewed, and police citied a lack of evidence in not moving forward with the investigation of Gore.

The full police report is available for viewing here.

Late Wednesday, an official statement was released by Multnomah County District Attorney Michael D. Schrunk, pointing to the continued possibility of criminal prosecution in the matter: “If the complainant and the Portland Police Bureau wish to pursue the possibility of a criminal prosecution, additional investigation by the Bureau will be necessary and will be discussed with the Portland Police Bureau.”

The latest Enquirer exclusive comes only six months after John Edwards admitted to his affair, as well as fathering a child with his mistress, and only a few weeks after Al and Tipper Gore announced their divorce.
