There’s no shortage of reasons why the vuvuzela should go. But what about a legal ruling?
For South Africa, vuvuzelas are symbolic of the nation’s soccer pride. As for the United Arab Emirates, the same sentiments are not shared.
The National reports that the UAE’s General Authority of Islamic Affairs and Endowments has declared vuvuzelas as part of a preordained fatwa. If the plastic horns grow to levels high enough to inflict damage on one’s hearing (100 decibels), they are declared haram (forbidden).
According to the authority’s study, current vuvuzelas on the market can reach up to 127 decibels. That means that with the new law in play local businesses looking to cash in on the World Cup fad in the UAE can kiss that notion goodbye.
