David Letterman’s attempted extortionist was the most unusual name to garner an Emmy nomination when the list came out yesterday.

Robert “Joe” Halderman got an Emmy nod for his work as a producer for CBS’s “48 Hours Mystery.” The show’s coverage of the Amanda Knox trial earned a nomination for the best continuing coverage of a news story by a newsmagazine.

The only problem? Halderman is currently serving a six-month sentence after pleading guilty in March to an attempted grand larceny charge. Halderman threatened late-night host Letterman in Oct. 2009 with the release of sordid details of a Letterman tryst with a late-night staffer.

The awards will be presented Sept. 27 in a ceremony in New York.
