Apple is set to make an announcement regarding the iPhone 4 at a news conference this afternoon. Some speculate the company will address the phone’s infamous reception issues. But what will they do about it?

The conference comes after consumer and media backlash around the so-called  “death grip” — when users hold the phone with their left hand, covering a crucial antenna area on the phone’s lower left corner, reception drops dramatically.

Bloomberg Businessweek reports that Apple probably won’t issue a recall — which isn’t surprising, given it would cost them $1.5 billion — but they might offer refunds or rubber cases that improve reception. The U.K’s Telegraph reports that Apple’s new operating system update, iOS 4.0.1, will relieve reception problems. Consumer Reports found that Apple’s rubber “bumper” case negates the phone’s signal issues as well.

If Apple offers no solution — or doesn’t even discuss reception — just follow Techland’s lead and use scotch tape.
