BP announced Tuesday Robert Dudley would be the company’s next CEO, replacing Tony Hayward. Find out more about the first non-Brit to take BP’s helm.

  • Will become chief executive in October
  • Has been overseeing the day-to-day operations of the oil spill cleanup since June
  • 54 years old, grew up in Hattiesburg, Mississippi
  • Earned a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from the University of Illinois, and earned an MBA from Southern Methodist University
  • Hired as CEO partly in an attempt to improve BP’s reputation in America, as about one-third of its business is in America
  • Ran BP’s joint joint venture in Russia, TNK-BP, for eight years, where he reportedly clashed with business partners the Russian government in 2008
  • Worked for Amoco since 1979, in America, the U.K. and Russia; BP bought Amoco in 1998
  • Is often described as even-tempered and “very steady
  • Lost the CEO spot to Hayward three years ago
