Chief U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker is expected today to rule on Proposition 8, a controversial same-sex marriage ban in California.

Proposition 8, passed two years ago with 52 percent of the popular vote, defines marriage in the state as only between a man and a woman. Two gay couples, along with the city of San Francisco, sued, alleging the law infringed on the rights of gay and lesbian California residents, according to the Associated Press.  Walker will decide whether the law is unconstitutional.

Either way, though, same-sex marriage activists and opponents both say this certainly won’t be the last ruling on the subject. Both sides expect this case to move to the Supreme Court,  CNN reported.
