The world of cycling has been best known in recent years for allegations surrounding drug use among the sport’s stars rather than reflecting on their awesome achievements. That doesn’t look like changing any time soon.

The New York Times is reporting that other riders are now backing up the claims of Floyd Landis, who came forward in May to accuse his former team mate Lance Armstrong (and other team members) of taking performance-enhancing drugs and blood transfusions to improve performance.

Prosecutors and investigators (two people with knowledge of the case spoke on condition of anonymity) have questioned many of Armstrong’s former associates, including cyclists who support Landis’s claims. For his own part, Armstrong didn’t respond to requests for comment put to his agent and his manager Wednesday.

But Armstrong’s views are pretty explicit: near the end of the recently finished Tour de France, the seven-time winner (who didn’t remotely trouble the standings this year) said he’d deny any involvement in doping “as long as I live.” If investigators get their way, he may well get more opportunities to answer these questions that just won’t go away.
