Happy Anniversary, The Wizard of Oz!

Today’s Google doodle celebrates The Wizard of Oz, which had its first premiere screening 71 years ago today.

Google’s scene depicts the Cowardly Lion, the Scarecrow, Dorothy, Toto and the Tin Man heading down the yellow brick road to Emerald City. The word “Google” is written into the landscape. The artwork is similar to a scene depicted below. (Read more about Google doodles.)

The Guardian has a list of 71 Wizard of Oz facts for 71 years.  Did you know the head of MGM was the one who decided Dorothy’s slippers should be ruby, not silver? (Another fun fact: the Wizard of Oz made TIME’s Top 10 Wizards list.)
