…Rooney Mara. Who?

Mara is an American actress whose most notable role to date has been playing the female lead in the recent Nightmare on Elm Street remake. If the name sounds familiar, it’s because she comes from a famous family: sister Kate Mara is also an actress (she played Heath Ledger’s daughter in Brokeback Mountain) and great-great-grandfather Ted Mara was the founder of the New York Giants.

The casting brings to an end a long search to find a new Lisbeth Salander, the lesbian hacker heroine of Stieg Larsson’s best-selling Girl with a Dragon Tattoo series, for the American film adaptation of the franchise. (Actress Noomi Rapace played Salander in a series of Swedish films based on the books; she declined to be considered for the remakes.) Nearly every twentysomething starlet in Hollywood (including Natalie Portman, Carey Mulligan and Ellen Page) was rumored to be competing for the role but in the end director David Fincher went with the relatively-unknown Mara, whom he had directed in upcoming Facebook filmThe Social Network.

Mara will star alongside Daniel Craig, who has been cast as crusading business reporter Mikael Blomkvist. Robin Wright Penn and Stellan Skarsgard are reported to have taken the roles of Erika Berger and Martin Vanger, respectively.

Though NewsFeed doesn’t know much about Mara, we approve of the casting for the sole reason that we didn’t want anyone famous playing Salander. Sorry every famous actress in Hollywood, you’re just too pretty. (via Deadline)
