Recycling bins are set to disappear in favor of rechargeable batteries.

That’s the thesis currently being stirred by Ross Dawson, a futurist who sees a narrowing place for print media in Australia over the next decade. The Australian writes that Dawson sees the progression of mobile news devices rendering newspapers unnecessary by 2022. The diminishing returns of old-form news will pave the way for ‘primary news interfaces’ like the iPad to drive the conversation.

This theory of “crowdsourced” media consumption adds an intriguing financial twist. With social media driving how news is shared, Dawson also professes that tablet readers will one day cost a candy-store price of less than $10. He will unveil more of his thoughts at an Australian Newspaper Publishers’ Association forum on Thursday.
