Foreign Policy is reporting that in the next few days, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter will go to North Korea on a rescue mission.
The aim is reportedly to rescue Aijalon Mahli Gomes, a 30-year-old Boston resident who was sentenced to eight years in prison after crossing from China to North Korea. Carter will be operating as a private citizen, just as Bill Clinton did when he brought back journalists Euna Lee and Laura Ling.
Obama’s administration does not want this visit to reflect any official stance towards North Korea. Carter was selected to go because he is no longer a government employee; Sen. John Kerry had volunteered to go but was not chosen due to his status as a public servant.
