Prime Minister David Cameron’s wife, Samantha Cameron, gave birth to their fourth child while the couple were on vacation in the south-west of England on Tuesday.

An official statement said: “The Prime Minister and Mrs. Cameron are delighted to announce the birth of their fourth child, a baby girl. Both the baby – who was born weighing 6 lbs, 1 oz – and Mrs Cameron are doing very well. The PM and Mrs Cameron would like to thank the doctors and nurses at the hospital for their help and kindness.”

Prime Minister David Cameron has now spoken briefly to the media. “It all happened very very quickly,” he said. His daughter was “beautiful” and the couple were “absolutely thrilled and excited” by her arrival. Cameron confirmed he probably wouldn’t have anything to do with the naming of the baby (he joked that his job had been to “make the toast and the tea”) but felt that one of the names might be something Cornish as the family are currently on vacation in Cornwall. One British bookmaker is already offering odds on what the name will be.

The child is only the second born to a serving prime minister since the Second World War. The first was Leo Blair, son of Tony and Cherie Blair, born in May 2000. The Camerons’ first child, Ivan, died last January at age six. They also have a daughter, six-year-old Nancy and four-year-old son Arthur Elwen.
