In what must be the most unfortunate coincidence of the day, an alleged British spy who worked for MI6 has been found dead in his apartment with the news coming out on the same day as 007 himself, Sean Connery, turned 80 years old.
The details that have emerged thus far are almost too far-fetched for an Ian Fleming novel: it’s thought that the man who has been named locally (but not officially by authorities) Gareth Williams might not only have died weeks ago but was discovered stabbed to death inside a bag in the bathtub of his apartment. He lived near to MI6 headquarters, an organization which, it has been alleged, gathers information about Britain’s overseas enemies.
Police broke into the property after colleagues said they hadn’t seen Williams for at least 10 days. Officers found a cell phone and several SIM cards. Not much else is known and, in keeping with the secretive nature of anything MI6-related, a spokesman for the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office said: “This is a police matter. It is long-standing Her Majesty’s Government policy not to confirm or deny any individual working for the intelligence agencies.” (via BBC)
