Two men hiking in the Canadian Rockies discovered the remains of William Holland, an American climber who vanished over two decades ago.
Hikers in Jasper National Park, Alberta found Holland’s body fully preserved, entombed by glacial ice and still wearing his climbing gear, spiked boots on his feet and rope tossed over his shoulder, ITN reports.
“He was basically in a deep freeze for the last 21 years,” said Garth Lemke, public safety expert with Parks Canada.
In April 1989, Holland, 38, of Gorham, Maine was climbing a frozen waterfall on the northern face of the Snow Dome Mountain when an offshoot of snow he was standing on collapsed. Holland plummeted over 1,000 ft. Attempts at search and rescue were forced to close due to extremely hazardous weather conditions.
Mr Lemke said since 1970, the bodies of at least two other mountaineers who went missing in Jasper National Park have never been recovered.
