Could you survive a week without Facebook? One university is giving it a try.

Harrisburg University of Science and Technology, located in Harrisburg, Penn., will block social sites like Facebook, Twitter and instant messaging on campus computers. At the end of the week, students will write a reflective essay about their experiences.

Why the ban? Provost Eric Darr explains that he wants students to be aware of their dependence on social technology.

Though the action seems sweeping, there are easy ways to get through the ban. Students who use smartphones or who live off-campus won’t be affected. Campus officials should expect an eerie silence on campus, as students undoubtedly will cram into off-campus apartments for their Facebook fix.
