Rest easy, your BMWs and Mustangs are safe. It’s your clunkers you need to keep an eye on.

According to statistics released by the National Insurance Crime Bureau this week, the most-stolen car in the U.S. last year was a 1994 Honda Accord. Experts speculate that popular mid-90s vehicles are stolen more frequently than other cars because of the demand for their parts in auto shops across the country. Newer, more luxurious cars that are stolen are often shipped overseas to be sold intact, the Bureau said.

The FBI also just released it’s annual Uniform Crime Report, which shows that grand theft auto is down from the previous year. Just 794,616 vehicles were stolen in 2009 compared to 2008’s 956,846 – giving 2009 the lowest stolen vehicle tally in some 20 years. It’s good news for everyone, except perhaps owners of a ’94 Honda Accord.
