Who hasn’t been waiting for this?

Reportedly, Paramount Pictures is gunning to put Top Gun 2 up on the big screen, making offers to both Jerry Bruckheimer and director Tony Scott. And the best news? Tom Cruise has apparently agreed to reprise his role as Lt. Pete Mitchell, a.k.a. Maverick.

Though the role would be much smaller than the starring one of the 1986 original, Maverick would still feature in the film in what New York Magazine calls a “not too ‘obvious’ part, i.e. Lieutenant Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell as grizzled Top Gun flight instructor.”

Why is this such good news? While Cruise has lost some (okay, most) of the je ne sais quoi that made him so swoon-worthy back in the 80s, NewsFeed would like to point out that you should never underestimate the power of aviators and a flight suit.

NY Mag also notes that a second movie could lead to a Top Gun franchise and a profitable one at that. After all, the first movie did rake in $353 million worldwide. (via New York Magazine)
