Who says Canadians are nice all the time? In January of 2000, CTV anchor Avery Haines flubbed a line in a taped broadcast, and
cracked about it to the crew: "I kind of like the stuttering thing. Equal-opportunity, right? We have a stuttering newscaster, we've got the black, we've got the Asian, we've got the woman. I could be a
... lesbian, folk-dancing black woman stutterer — in a wheelchair, with gimping rubber legs." As Haines intended, she managed to tick off almost every demographic box (she forgot religion); as Haines did not intend, the blooper accidentally made it on air. The remarks landed on the front page of the Toronto Sun, and Haines was fired two days later. After weathering a media firestorm the anchor landed on her feet: That February she joined competing network Citytv.—Nate Jones(See pictures from the career of Joe Scarborough.) MORE
