British dating website The Ugly Bug Ball has an … interesting premise: It’s a site for people who may not exactly be lookers, but probably have great personalities, to get to know one another. Or, as the website itself bluntly puts it, “If you are one of the millions of people [who] don’t always like what they see in the mirror, then this is the place for you!”
NewsFeed feels a little sad about this, and in fact is brainstorming ways to give each member of the site a hearty self-esteem boost. But today is not the day for judging Ugly Bug Ball’s membership, today is the day for celebrating it: Last week members Tom Clifford and Janine Walker announced plans to marry, marking the site’s first engagement.

The couple met on Ugly Bug Ball earlier this year, when Clifford sent Walker a message that read, “‘Dear Janine, Just seen your beautiful face on The Ugly Bug Ball and would love to meet up. You live near me, so this shouldn’t be a problem. I’ve got a face that makes children cry but, as they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder – and I think you’ll love me too.”
After four dates (which honestly seems a little soon, but who are we to judge?) the couple decided to get engaged. As Clifford told the Telegraph:
”I always thought that I was too ugly to meet Mrs Right but my life changed when I met Janine. She’s beautiful and I love her in every possible way. I still can’t believe this is happening.”
Walker added:
“Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and to me Tom’s the perfect, handsome prince.”
The website has given the happy couple a free honeymoon in the Welsh town of Borth. We hope these crazy kids make it! (From the Telegraph via LemonDrop. Incidentally, the Telegraph has a photo of Tom and Janine and they look like completely normal people. Definitely not crying-instigating!)
