Is there nothing that Google won’t turn its hand to?

Boutiques.com makes its entry into the crowded online fashion marketplace Wednesday and is backed up by the technology from Google’s recent purchase acquisition of Like.com, the shopping site with a sophisticated visual search.

But be warned: you won’t actually be able buy anything but rather search (much like Google itself) for styles and items as well as following designers, celebrities and — whatever the heck this means — “tastemakers.” By clicking through to online retailers, you can actually complete the purchase and surely look hotter than your stuck-in-their-ways friend who insist, you know, on going to a shop and trying something on.

Among the designers on board with the project include Kate Spade, Oscar de la Renta and Betsey Johnson. Celebs are the likes of actresses Rashida Jones, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Jamie-Lynn Sigler.

Google/Boutiques.com is by no means the first to attempt this kind of venture: the virtual fashion community Polyvore and search engine ShopStyle let users style outfits and then click through to buy them. But they don’t have the weight (never a good thing in the fashion world) to compete with Google and will be hoping that they don’t appear skinny in comparison. (Via Relax News)
