Heavy snow Monday night forced hundreds of motorists to spend the night in their cars. Bet you’re not complaining about your small apartment now.

Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England have been bearing the brunt of the bad weather. The Scottish government held an emergency meeting and Transport Minister Stewart Stevenson apologized as hundreds of drivers were stranded overnight, with Scotland’s central belt badly hit by snow.

But though this resulted in an uncomfortable night for drivers, tragedy struck elsewhere as an elderly man was found dead at a trailer park. He was in his 70s and was discovered at the Thorpe Park site in Cleethorpes, northern England. The pensioner’s death comes soon after a man died trying to clear snow outside his home in County Durham and takes the number of weather-related deaths to nine.

As for the latest updates Tuesday, thousands of schoolchildren are having the day off with more snow forecast for many parts of Britain. December has seen a brutal start to the month but the weather is a cruel, cold mistress, which often doesn’t relent. There would now be a certain irony if the one day of the month that it doesn’t snow is on Christmas Day itself. (via Sky News)
