At least we now know what the $ stands for.

The online music streaming service has compiled the most-“scrobbled” (their hipster term for “played”) albums of the year and the 23 year-old pop star handily won with an impressive 16 million plays of the Animal album (it’s worth noting that singles, EPs or compilations don’t count). Ke$ha (her real name is Kesha Rose Sebert) takes the title from last year’s winner, Lady Gaga, who didn’t even make the top 10 this time around. It’s probably the furthest thing on Gaga’s mind right now, what with the weather in Europe taking a considerable toll.

Back to Last.Fm’s list and British indie darlings Mumford & Sons were the (possibly) surprise runners-up, with Sigh No More racking up 11.6 million plays and Arcade Fire’s The Suburbs in third place with just over 11 million. Rounding out the top five: Gorillaz Plastic Beach and Vampire Weekend’s Contra. Credit due to Last.Fm as that makes for a pretty entertaining playlist.

Ke$ha’s stock has been on the rise since the infectious “TiK ToK” from 2009 but Animal has spawned some monster hits, in the shape of “Blah Blah Blah”, “Dirty Picture” and “Take It Off.” And touring with Rihanna can’t have hurt either when it came to the all important “scrobbles.” But can any of these achievements compare to the way in which she’ll see in the New Year? Ke$ha is performing on Dick Clark’s annual New Years Rockin’ Eve and it’s to be hoped that she’ll be asked about “scrobbles” at every possible opportunity.
