Britain’s Daily Mail is reporting that the Obamas didn’t make the cut for next April’s royal wedding in London. As the event isn’t a state occasion, it’s believed that the couple feel no need to send out invites to heads of state, preferring instead to ask ordinary citizens and charity workers to fill the 2,000 seats. That said, it’s rumored that French President Nicolas Sarkozy and his wife Carla Bruni will be asked, which might show that entente cordiale has a stronger sway than the Special Relationship.

Prince William’s parents, Prince Charles and Princess Diana, did invite then-American president Ronald Reagan and his wife Nancy to their 1981 wedding (in the end, Nancy came alone because President Reagan was unable to travel following the assassination attempt on him.) Could Charles put some paternal pressure on William to make sure that the Obamas are involved or will he leave the guest list alone?
Somewhat hedging his bets, a senior courtier said, “It is certainly not the case that all foreign heads of state will be excluded. The guest list is still being drawn up and could change, but as things stand it’s right (to say Mr. Obama will not be invited).”
