Christmas trees traditionally gain their luster via ornaments, tinsel and other standard fare. At Claridge’s, the iconic art-deco hotel in London, luxury label Christian Dior’s creative director has taken an underwater approach to holiday decorations.

John Galliano’s latest Christmas creation replaces the average tree’s trimmings with clams, sea horses, and even a jellyfish. In the video above, TIME’s William Lee Adams visits with Thomas Kochs, Claridge’s Hotel Manager, to get a sense of the process behind assembling the tree and the overall thinking behind Galliano’s Christmas gesture.
