A gunman in his 20s went on a rampage Saturday morning at a political event outside a Safeway supermarket in Tucson, Arizona, firing numerous shots with a semi-automatic weapon.

One of the shots struck Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords in the head. CNN reports six deaths and 12 injuries at the gruesome scene. Rep. Giffords was rushed to the hospital, and after facing hours of surgery she’s in critical condition but is likely to survive. Federal judge John Roll and a 9-year-old child were among those killed in the gunfire.

Giffords, a Democrat, recently won a 3rd term in the 8th Congressional district of Arizona after a heated race. TIME’s political analysts at Swampland will have the latest information on the shootings as it comes in. (via Swampland)
