Ten architecture firms have teamed up to design a $250 million retirement community for gay people called Boom.

Set in the desert near California’s Palm Springs, Boom is expected to include 300 residencies (condos and single-family spaces) within 8 neighborhoods. But don’t let the retirement community label fool you. Boom will feature nightclubs, a gym and spa, a boutique hotel, as well as an outdoor movie theater, among other amenities. Parties, concerts, tournaments and discos will give the community a cultural boost, too.

Each architecture firm has been allotted a plot of the 100-acre space and creative freedom to develop their vision for Boom, which hopes to redefine what communal living for older citizens can be. Contemporary design and sustainability will be hallmarks in any designs for the space, which will be open to straight people even though it was originally conceived as a retirement area for the LBGT community.

The team is slated to begin work next year and complete the project by 2014. You can see additional designs from the 10 designers here. (via Architizer)
