New Yorkers can now rest easy — the escaped Bronx Zoo Cobra has been found ssssafe and ssssound, and not at Yankee Stadium.

The 20-inch-long Egyptian Cobra, which slithered into our hearts after escaping from its enclosure a week ago, was found on Thursday by zoo officials, coiled in a secluded, dark corner of the reptile house, according to zoo director Jim Breheny in a press conference held this afternoon.

The adolescent female snake, which weighed in today at a slight three ounces, is now being held under observation — and likely enjoying some much-needed nourishment — until it’s eventually put back on exhibition.

“We’re really happy to announce that cobra missing for seven days has been found,” Breheny said. “She’s alive and well … resting comfortably and secure.”

While zoo officials have maintained that the fanged fugitive was somewhere within the reptile house all along, which has been closed since the snake’s escape for visitors’ safety, the reptile’s Twitter persona @BronxZoosCobra has provided conflicting accounts. From Broadway shows to the Museum of Natural History and Ray’s Pizza to H&H Bagel, the slippery snake’s online character made the escapee famous by chronicling it’s week as a #snakeonthetown.

No word yet from the Cobra herself (via Twitter, of course) on her capture, but at least the last tweet was in the right borough: “If you see a bag of peanuts inexplicably moving along the ground at Yankee Stadium today. Just ignore it. It’s probably nothing.”

With more than 200,000 Twitter followers, as well as a campaign for @BronxZoosCobra to host Saturday Night Live, NewsFeed is anxious to see if the real identity of the snake’s cyber persona will be revealed. (via New York Daily News)
