The Bronx Zoo has decided to give the cobra a proper name. But like the snake itself, what to call her is eluding zoo officials.
To solve this latest slippery problem, the Bronx Zoo is soliciting recommendations from the public to name their newest star resident, the runaway Egyptian cobra that both captivated and terrorized this past week.

While she’s back in her cage (hopefully for good this time) after a quick tour around the Reptile House, Bronx Zoo officials don’t see the buzz about her dying down. The snake has been referred to simply as “she” or “the cobra,” but wouldn’t it be more fitting to have an official moniker – so she can be written into the history books, perhaps?
The public can submit potential names for the 20-inch cobra on the Bronx Zoo website until 1 p.m. on Monday, when the five top suggestions will be put to a vote. So far, commenters seem to favor Egyptian princess names like Cleopatra or Nefertiti, with a few humorous yet fitting suggestions like Oprah (because of her newfound status in the limelight) or Houdini (given her obvious escape artist tendencies).
Or perhaps, in the interest of social media pandering, they’ll name her @BronxZoosCobra, after the snake’s supposed online persona that kept us laughing as it chronicled the cobra’s New York adventures post-escape.
