Two women were rescued from a remote beach in Hawaii Thursday morning after writing “SOS” in the sand. (via the AP)
The women were on the island in Na Pali Coast State Park which is located on the island of Kauai. A naval aircrew training off the coast spotted their distress signal sent a helicopter and search-and rescue swimmer to help them. According to the AP, one of the women was ill and injured and both were taken to the Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital.

Specific information about the women’s situation has not been released, but the Kauai Visitors Bureau executive director told the AP that the beach was only accessible by hiking or from the water. Moral of the story: some crucial survival skills aren’t that hard to master after all.
