A recent survey revealed that more than half the people in the United Kingdom want Prince William to be the next monarch.

The Panelbase survey, which was conducted for the Sunday Times, polled 2,000 adults and found that 59% of them would choose Prince William to take over the throne. To no great surprise, young women provided the most overwhelming support for a break from custom, with 78% of those aged 18-34 responding in favor of the latest royal heartthrob.

For some caught up in the royal wedding craze, this may seem like an obvious choice (how many young Yanks thought Will was the supposed heir in the first place?). But according to standard succession, William’s father, Prince Charles, should be next in line.

The survey also indicated that one third of people think the Queen Elizabeth, who at 84 is the oldest monarch to sit on the English throne, should step down within the next two years. Is royal-wedding fever leading Brits to pine for Queen Kate?
