Salty Spat: Campbell’s Sued Over ‘25% Less Sodium’ Soup Label

On Wednesday a federal judge allowed four New Jersey women who sued the Campbell Soup Company last year to proceed with their lawsuit.

The women pressed claims after noticing that Campbell’s “25% Less Sodium” Tomato Soup contains 480 mg of sodium: the exact same amount as in the regular kind. According to the judge, the Consumer Fraud Act gives the women a right to press charges over the misleading label.

Campbell says that the “25% less sodium” label compares their soup to competing brands rather than their own products. They said in a statement that they and that their labels “meet regulatory and other legal requirements.” But according to U.S. District Judge Jerome Simandle and these four New Jersey women that may not be the case.

Seems that Campbell has been doing some “M’mm m’mm” marketing, but it will be up to the court to decide for sure.
