Cesar Chavez’s Ship Squabble: 5 Navy Naming Controversies

As the U.S. Navy reportedly plans to name a ship the USNS Cesar Chavez, critics were none too pleased. See five Navy naming controversies.

The Navy was expected to announce Wednesday that it was naming a new cargo vessel the USNS Cesar Chavez (called USNS instead of USS because the ship's crew consists of mostly civilians). Chavez was a Mexican-American advocate for labor rights, but not a person one would associate with the Navy. Some critics argue that naming ... the ship after Chavez stems from partisan (read: Democratic) motivations.
