Frankly, everything about this story is gross.
Kerry Campbell went on Good Morning America to talk about how she injected her 8-year-old daughter, Britney, with Botox in order to give her a competitive edge in beauty pageants. The segment included photos of what appeared to be Campbell giving injections to her daughter and an interview with Britney, who said she wanted the injections to be beautiful even though they hurt. The story was met with almost universal outrage and Campbell promptly saw her daughter taken away from her by child services.
Yet, now Campbell is saying the whole thing is a hoax — and that her name isn’t even Kerry Campbell.
TMZ reports that they have a document from Sheena Upton, saying she lied about giving her daughter Botox injections in order to make money. She said she was paid $200 by the British paper The Sun to say she was Kerry Campbell and that she had been giving her daughter the treatments. She was then asked to be on GMA, which TMZ reports paid $10,000 to Upton for the appearance. (An ABC insider reportedly told TMZ that that isn’t true. The $10,000 was for photo licenses.)
Upton, according to TMZ, has now written a declaration (which was signed under penalty of perjury), reneging on her original story, “so her lawyer can secure full rights to custody of her daughter.” Upton also claims to have taken her daughter to the UCLA Medical Center on Tuesday where, allegedly, doctors found that she hadn’t been injected with Botox.
The San Francisco Chronicle noted that there didn’t appear to be any Kerry Campbell living in San Francisco, as well as some discrepancies in the GMA story and The Sun‘s story. While Campbell was said to be a 38-year-old mom on the GMA segment, The Sun describes her as a 34-year-old woman from Birmingham (who now lives in San Francisco).
So what do we believe? Did this woman inject her daughter with Botox and then lie to cover it up in a desperate attempt to get her daughter back? Or did she really drag her daughter into this convoluted side-show for quick cash? No matter what, it’s unlikely Campbell (Upton?) will be able to easily convince anyone that it was a hoax or to get her daughter back.
Like we said, this whole story is gross. (via TMZ)
