‘I Like Katy Perry More Than My Family’: A Superfan Reveals His Obsession

Who needs wallpaper when you’ve got Katy Perry?

This might just be the biggest fan of anyone, anywhere. Jack Moore, a 16-year-old from Sussex, UK, has a normal, well-kept bedroom – aside from the floor-to-ceiling plastering of Katy Perry images on his walls. In the mini-documentary about him titled Katy & I, he opens his room for the cameras to gaze upon his obsession. Boxes and boxes full of his obsession.

Seemingly everything in young Jack’s bedroom bears the image of Katy Perry. The coffee mugs he drinks out of are emblazoned with her face, which somehow “makes everything taste nicer,” and he even sees her face every time he flips his lights on or off, thanks to a well-placed light switch cover. Showing off his thousands of photos, posters, magazine clippings, newspaper articles, and even a handmade painting of him and Katy, Jack appears quite bashful. But this is no fleeting fan. He’s created a veritable shrine to the “Teenage Dream” singer.

And his online habits confirm his obsession. His Tumblr blog is splayed with just as many Katy Perry images as are on his walls. And he’s notched up more than 26,000 plays of Katy Perry tracks on Last.fm, a website that tracks music-listening habits. (A very distant second is Lady Gaga with a pale 7,800 listens.)

Jack maintains a striking duality between humor and hardiness when it comes to his obsession. He understands the jokes people make – he says his friends call it the “serial killer room” for keeping so many photos – but he refuses to give in, continuing his collection with an intoxicating enthusiasm. In fact, he shamelessly admits he likes Katy Perry more than his family.

Obsession knows no extremes, especially when it comes to musicians: Justin’s “Beliebers” verbally attacked Esperanza Spalding after she won the Best New Artist Grammy, and Lady Gaga’s “Little Monsters” made her the first Tweeter to surpass 10 million followers. And the admiration is often reciprocal. Katy Perry proved her love for her fans when she rounded up 250 inspirational teens to star in her “Firework” video instead of using actors.

Would Jack qualify for TLC’s My Strange Addiction? Or is he better suited for Hoarders?
