Think Your Family Is Embarrassing? Dad Dresses in Costume to Wave at Son’s School Bus

Remember when you still had to take the school bus even though you were in tenth grade? The night your parents waved goodbye from the driveway as you pulled away on a date? That Halloween when your grown folks insisted on dressing up in costumes?

For 16-year-old Rain Price of American Fork, Utah, that’s all a typical morning. In fact, 170 typical mornings.

On the first day of school this year, Rain’s parents realized their son’s bus would directly pass their house and decided to run in front to wave as it went by. That night, Rain complained to his mother: “Mom, please, please, please, don’t let Dad go back out there,” Rain’s father, Dale, recounted overhearing his son say, on Good Morning America.

Go out there again his father did. Taking his son’s words as a challenge, the next day Dale stood outside of the house sporting a Chargers jersey and helmet. The following day dad was Anakin Skywalker. Day seven brought Kung Fu Panda. Day 72: Happy Foot; Day 152: Princess Leia; Day 170: a pirate.

170 days, all documented on the WaveAtTheBus blog. And all for less than 50 dollars—“You do not want to know what is in your neighbors’ closets,” Dale joked on Good Morning America. The worst, says Rain, was a Little Mermaid get-up, shell bikini-top and all. Still, at some point Rain admits it went from embarrassing to just plain funny.

Rain never knew his father’s costume in advance, giving Dale only the four minutes between the time his son would leave for the bus and the time the bus would pass the house to get fully ready.

Guess, that’s one way to make sure your kids are on-time for school.
