Concerned parents in the city near Japan’s troubled nuclear reactor have come up with innovative concepts for their children’s playtime.

Leaving the outdoor playgrounds deserted out of fear of radiation, which can be particularly detrimental to children, schools in Fukushima, Japan are bringing the outdoors in. Parents and administrators are clearing space indoors, pushing aside desks and learning supplies in favor of a quite messy sandbox. This Fukushima school just 60 km (37 mi) from the troubled plant procured sand from distant prefecture to ensure the kids could play contamination-free. Another school has turned a classroom into an indoor gym area where kids can run free.

Despite a sunny summer season, it appears parents are taking no chances inside the contamination zone. But for the kids, it’s just as fun.
