Music Monday: To Celebrate Harry Potter, the Top 5 Songs About Magic

The final Harry Potter movie comes out on July 15. But then again, you probably already knew that. In honor of Hogwarts’ most famous wizard, NewsFeed has compiled a list of our top 5 favorite songs about magic.

(LIST: Top 10 Coolest Spells from Harry Potter)

5. “Magic Dance”

Ah, Labyrinth David Bowie—one of the better Bowie incarnations. The androgynous rock star starred in Jim Henson’s 1986 nightmarish children’s movie about a goblin king who steals a baby. “Magic Dance,” Bowie’s song from the film, isn’t one of his best songs, but it does have some great opening dialogue:  “You remind me of the babe / What babe? / The babe with the power.”  Why doesn’t Harry Potter dance like this?

4.  “Do You Believe in Magic?”

NewsFeed feels conflicted about this 1965 hit. It’s sweet, it’s sentimental and it’s by the Lovin’ Spoonful (also of “You Didn’t Have to Be So Nice” and “Summer in the City” fame). But the song’s title sounds like a terrible pick-up line that might be uttered by a creepy man in a bar.

3. “Black Magic Woman”

When you think of the song “Black Magic Woman,” you probably think of Santana’s 1970 cover. But actually, the original version of the song is by Fleetwood Mac. Written by Mac’s Peter Green and released in 1968, it’s about being bewitched by a nefarious woman—or possibly drugs.

2. “Season of the Witch”

Donovan’s psychedelic 1967 hit is an underrated gem of a song. Just listen to the way he cries out the chorus. Was this song ever used in advertisements for the TV show Charmed? If not, it should have been.

 1. “Magic Carpet Ride”

Steppenwolf’s 1968 smash hit off their second album (aptly titled The Second) might be one of the best magic songs ever. Too bad Harry Potter doesn’t fly on a magic carpet; instead, he has to make do with the Weasley family’s enchanted car.
