Sometimes the best ideas are the ones you hear about after it’s too late.

Case in point: To relieve Los Angeles motorists who will be suffering in the midst of Carmegeddon as the Interstate 405 freeway shuts down this weekend, JetBlue airlines offered flights between Burbank and Long Beach for $4. Granted the flight would be 20 minutes, but the drive on Saturday would likely be more than an hour — if you can figure out a route.

But if you were too late to take up the low fare airline on their offer, tough tamales, man! The four flights sold out in about three hours, as about 600 people signed up for the deal.

Sharon Jones, a JetBlue spokeswoman, said the flight, which basically offers a short view of the 405 to the west, is not a regular route and will be discontinued after the promotion is over.

“We just started talking about the fact that the 405 would be closed and thought it would be a fun, unique way to get people to try us out and help out the L.A. community,” she said.
