Kate McCann, mother of missing British girl Maddie, looks on as she holds pictures of the daughter, (left) shortly before her fourth birthday and (right) how investigators believe she might have looked at age six.

A girl with striking resemblance to Madeleine McCann, a British girl who has been missing for four years, was spotted in India. But the parents say it’s not their girl.

The Daily Mail reports the British woman known as Carol spotted a girl bearing striking resemblance to Maddie at a Market in Leh in northern India. Two American tourists even tried to take the girl from the couple she was with. The couple, a French woman and a Belgian man, claimed they were the little girl’s biological parents. The local police photocopied their passports and requested DNA testing.

Even though the testing results have yet to come out, the already dejected parents Gerry and Kate McCann did get their hopes up. “Kate and Gerry do not believe the child seen in India was Madeleine. They have seen photographic evidence and concluded that it was not her,” their spokesman Clarence Mitchell told the Daily Mail.

Madeleine McCann disappeared in May 2007 in Praia da Luz, Portugal. The parents left Maddie and her twin siblings at the family’s vacation apartment alone and went to dinner. They had left the door unlocked. The parents claim that they and seven other friends at the dinner took turns checking on the children. Around 10 p.m. the mother discovered that Maddie’s bed was empty and called the police. The Portuguese police had named one local man and the parents as suspects soon after, but the status cleared has been cleared.

The Portuguese police investigated the case for a year until 2008, and recently in May 2011, David Cameron requested the Scotland Yard to carry out further investigation. Despite world wide publicity, the search for Maddie, who would be 8 years old now, has yielded no results yet.
