It’s a bird, it’s a plane — it’s a Superman reboot!

Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures have just released the first shot of actor Henry Cavill as the DC Comics superhero in Man of Steel, set to hit theaters in June 2013.

The Zack Snyder-helmed flick is jam-packed with stars. Joining Cavill in the film are Amy Adams as Lois Lane and Laurence Fishburne as Perry White, the editor of The Daily Planet. Clark Kent’s parents are played by Kevin Costner and Diane Lane, while Superman’s birth parents are portrayed by Russell Crowe and Julia Ormond. Superman’s nemesis, General Zod, will be played by Michael Shannon.

Cavill talked to Total Film about what it’s like to don the iconic spandex suit:

“They just put it on, I turned around and look in the mirror and you can’t really play it cool – you sort of guffaw and laugh. I thought ‘OK, holy hell, this is real, it’s not a joke anymore. This is it…you’re doing it, you’re right in the middle of it.’”

Regardless of how Cavill will look in the suit, he’s got quite a task ahead of him. Let’s hope this Superman update fares better than 2006’s Superman Returns, which starred Brandon Routh and underwhelmed at the box office.
