The short-lived, multi-state crime spree of the siblings billed as “The Dougherty Gang” came to a crashing end on Wednesday, as they were felled by police who had been tipped they were in the Colorado Springs area.

Lee Grace, 29, Ryan, 21, and Stanley Dylan, 26, had been the focus of a manhunt since Aug. 2, ever since they allegedly shot at a Zephyrhills, Fla., policeman, then fled to Valdosta, Ga., where they reportedly robbed a bank. One of the robbers, according to the FBI, brandished an AK-47 in the holdup. The three got away with an undisclosed amount of cash.

But after leading Colorado State Patrol officers on a high-speed chase for about 20 miles until their vehicle crashed near Walsenburg, Colo., the three were taken into custody. Pueblo, Colo., police said the three were arrested after a shootout with police. Lee Grace was wounded in her leg, but her condition is unknown. One of her brothers fled on foot, but was captured at a nearby motel.

The spree didn’t get to legendary levels like Kate “Ma” Barker and her gang, or Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow, who swept through the Depression-era countryside robbing largely for the thrill of it, making headlines everywhere. But the Doughertys attracted an equivalent amount of Twitter coverage.

Police and even the siblings’ mother, Barbara Bell, worried that the spree would end badly largely due to a cryptic text message sent to their mom: “There’s a time for all of us to die.”

Bell, went on WFTS-TV in Tampa, Fla., pleading for her children to surrender themselves, hoping it is not too late. “Your lives are not over,” she said. “Only mom knows what good people you are inside. Please prove me right and everybody wrong by doing the right thing now and turning yourselves in.”

They might be good people in their mother’s eyes, but not as far as the courts are concerned. Ryan Dougherty had recently registered as a sex offender, Lee Grace Dougherty has charges pending regarding a hit-and-run, and Dylan Dougherty has been charged with marijuana possession.

Law enforcement wasn’t too fond of them either, warning the public that the trio carried an “arsenal” of weapons and that they are not afraid to use them. “They pose an imminent threat to any law enforcement that comes into contact with them,” said agent Stephen Emmett of the FBI’s Atlanta office. “They’ve also demonstrated a threat to the public as well.”

“So far, no one has been physically harmed,” said Bell. “The only good thing, possible thing for you to do is for you to turn yourselves in. I love you.”
