Traveling by land, sea and air, the Olympic torch is scheduled for one epic tour come summer 2012.
The organizers of the London games have announced the route that the torch will be carried on prior to the opening ceremonies on July 27 — and what a route it’ll be. Passing by iconic landmarks and sites such as Loch Ness and the River Thames, the torch will travel by cable car, zip-line, white water raft and hot-air balloon in addition to the more ordinary planes, trains and automobiles.
Here’s a quick rundown of the journey’s important numbers:
1,018 – number of places the torch will pass through
70 – number of days the relay will take to complete
8,000 – number of people who will take turns carrying the torch
8,000 – number of miles the entire journey will take
50 – percent of torchbearers who will be between the ages of 12 and 24. London Games organizer Sebastian Coe told the BBC “it is a young people’s torch.”
95 – percent of the British population who will be within 10 miles of the torch at one point during the relay
