There are a lot of things to consider when you’re planning a wedding. What sort of flowers to purchase. How to balance the seating arrangements. What gimmicky date you should choose to hold the big day.

Yes, that’s right. The Today show is reporting that thousands of couples are making their way to Las Vegas this week in order to legally pledge their love all so that they may write 11/11/11 as the date on their wedding certificate. According to Today, as of Tuesday, the Clark County clerk’s office — where would-be newlyweds send their Vegas wedding applications — said they had already received 3,500 pre-applications for Nov. 11, 2011. (The office typically only receives 1,000 applications for an entire month.) Vegas chapels have also reportedly upped the ante in anticipation of the big day, scheduling extra staff to coordinate the extra ceremonies.

If you’re the kind of person who can’t imagine why anyone would choose such a contrived way to make a wedding special, perhaps you weren’t aware that “[m]any people believe getting married on triple numbers is lucky and will bring a lifetime of fortune and happiness.” Or perhaps you were and you still just think it’s silly. Fair enough.
